Low Level Laser Therapy

Low Level Laser Therapy

Low level laser therapy is one of the more common ways to treat the progression of hair loss and help promote hair growth that is available today. Laser therapy has been found to slow or even halt hair loss, and with consistent use has also been found to grow and thicken existing hair.

Low level laser therapy is a well recognised option for treating hair loss. Only recently, within the past decade has laser light phototherapy gained acceptance in treating hair loss. Previously there were skeptics in the medical community who have since been swayed by the evidence from clinical trials. These include the most reputable doctors in the field of hair restoration and hair transplant surgery including world renowned doctors in the field of hair loss.

LLLT Explained

Lasers are not a new technology. In fact, laser light devices have been used for decades in different industries ranging from dermatology to physical therapy. Lasers are widely used in medicine and also throughout a variety of industries, in a multitude of varying capacities. The laser energy used to stimulate hair growth is visible in the red light spectrum. The laser light used in promoting hair growth is defined as low level laser therapy (LLLT).

The laser energy used to slow or stop the progression of hair loss is visible in the red light spectrum. Often referred to as a “cold laser”, the laser light is very low-level ranging between 630 to 670 nanometers, which has been shown to work for both male and female pattern hair loss without the risk of any side effects.

Low Level Laser Therapy at Work

When laser light therapy is applied to a targeted area - in this case the scalp, it has been found to increase blood flow to wherever it is being applied. The specific wavelength of light used in low level laser therapy (630 to 670 nm) stimulates the mitochondria (the energy centers of our cells), resulting in cells that become much more active. When this happens, the cells metabolise faster resulting in more blood flow. More blood flow means that more oxygen, platelets, and other healing properties that our bodies naturally produce get applied to help the affected area. The end result is a healthier scalp and more often than not, thicker, healthier new hair growth.

Who Can Benefit from Laser Therapy

Laser light therapy is a highly viable option for growing hair in men and women with androgenetic alopecia (inherited pattern hair loss). It is not intended to treat hair loss due to other medical conditions. In treating androgenetic alopecia, doctors have found that low level laser therapy is most effective in persons with minimal to moderate hair loss. Individual responses to laser therapy may differ and results do vary from person to person.

Available Laser Treatment Options

There are two choices when selecting low level laser therapy as a hair loss option. Both of these options end up accomplishing pretty much the same goal, to slow or stop hair loss and promote new healthy hair growth.

Hair Loss Clinic - Commonly, laser therapy options for in-clinic hair loss treatments consist of visiting your local hair loss clinic 2-3 times per week for up to 12 months to sit underneath a dome that administers light into the scalp to help strengthen and stimulate hair growth. Each treatment takes about 30-40 minutes per session and at the end of the programme, you can then purchase a maintenance plan annually to maintain the desired results or you can purchase one of their laser caps or combs. The biggest problems with in-clinic treatments are the cost, the inconvenience and the laser machines are outdated and inferior compared with todays at home laser devices.

At Home Products - With the development of new technology, the hair loss clinic laser machines are now becoming extinct. A more convenient and preferred approach to treating hair loss has now been introduced into the marketplace. It is now possible to purchase an at-home low level laser therapy device that is more powerful, has more lasers, is more convenient and affordable whilst providing better coverage.
